Friday, February 6th

Hello grade one families!

Mrs Carter should be back in class on February 17th. As there is an extra long weekend coming up, my last day with the class will be February 11th. I have loved getting to know your student over the last few months and I hope they enjoy the remainder of their time in grade one!

Our week started with some Valentine's Day art! We used oil pastels to colour in hearts, and noted the difference between warm and cool colours. Ask your student if red is a warm or cool colour!

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 11th. If your student would like to bring Valentine's Cards, please make sure to send one for every student in the class. We have 24 students in the class. Please only write who the Valentine's Cards are from, and do not put other student names on the cards to make to easier to distribute. As per CBE policy, please do not send candy along with the cards.

The Winter Olympics start today! Olympic athletes often show the values of friendship, excellence, and respect. We have a challenge at school to encourage students to display these values. If students are seen showing these values, they will win a gold medal! These medals will be added to the bulletin board in the front of the school. Ask your student which of the values they will be showing to earn a gold medal.

As next week is a very short week (no school Thursday and Friday), we will be skipping our weekly spelling test. We will instead be working on the FLSZ (flossez) rule. When a word ends with a short vowel, followed by an F, L, S, or Z, the last letter must be doubled. For example, in the word 'still', there is two Ls at the end instead of one! Other words that follow this rule include 'buzz', 'hill', 'miss', and 'puff'. A reading passage for this spelling rule will be sent home next week for practice.

In math, we have continued learning about different ways to make 10. On Monday, we will be using ladybugs with some missing dots to figure out how many dots we need to get the ladybug to 10!

This week in social studies, we continued learning about landmarks. Students identified some natural and manmade landmarks and drew some in their visual journals.

In science, we continue to learn about the properties of matter. This week, we used scales to compare the weight of objects in the classroom. Ask your student what object they found and if it was heavier or lighter than the object that their partner found.

Jump Rope for Heart started this week! Students are learning jump rope skills in phys. ed. They are also learning how to identify the signs of a stroke, and they have learned an EASY acronym for healthy living.

E - EAT fruits and vegetables

A - ACTIVE for 60 minutes per day

S - SCREENTIME under 2 hours per day

Y - YES to water, no to sugary drinks

Have a great weekend,

Ms Campbell
