Hello grade one families!

I finally have access to the weekly blog and will be posting updates here at the end of each week. Since I have been in for Ms. Carter, we have been learning lots!

In math, we have learned different ways to represent numbers, print numbers, evens and odds, and we have recently begun addition and doubles! This week we took a short break from doubles to learn about some 2D shapes. Ask your student about the shape monster they made on Wednesday! Next week we will be getting back to addition and focusing on the different ways to make 10.

In science, we have learned about the changing of seasons, what animals and people do in the winter time (including migrating, adapting, and hibernating). We have also done a few art projects for science, such as painting and drawing deciduous and coniferous trees in the fall and winter time. We have also recently started learning about the properties of matter, such as height, weight, length, and area. We will be continuing with this and learning about how we can change the properties of matter with things such as bending, twisting, or adding heat.

In social studies, we have talked about traditions and communities. Students shared with the class a tradition that they do, who they do it with, and why they enjoy it. For communities, students shared a community that they are a part of (such as hockey, rec house, friend group, etc). and why they enjoy being part of that community! This week we started talking about landmarks and how we can use landmarks to help us recognize and identify locations.

In literacy, we have finished learning all of the letters and sounds, and are working on sounding out CVC and CCVC words. We have been doing weekly spelling tests, for which the words have been sent home with students a few days ahead of time so they can get extra practice in! Next week we will also be adding a sentence to our spelling test.

The words for Thursday, January 29th are: said, have, what, want, stop, quit, land, grip, bump, best

The sentence for Thursday, January 29th is: I had fun in the sun.

Next week, students will be sent home with a reading passage to practice at home. At this point in the year, students should be able to read the passage independently by sounding out the words and be able to explain what the passage was about after reading it without assistance.

We have also been doing various writing tasks in which students are given a topic and asked to do their best to write a few sentences with sounded out words to communicate their ideas. Ask your student about the writing they did about their favourite toy, their winter break, or the various pictures we have written about!

A few reminders:
