Hello grade one families! It was great to finally meet so many of you this week during conferences. It is wonderful to see how supportive you all are of your students learning!

This week we learned some new heart words: said, have, what, and want. A reading passage was also sent home this week for extra practice and for you to see how your students reading is coming along. At this point in the school year, students should be able to recognize known heart words and sound out unknown words in the passage, and be able to explain what the passage was saying after they are done reading it. 

Our spelling words for next Friday will be: What, are, has, they, raft, felt, twin, spot, plum, mint

Our sentence will be: What do they have in the bag?

In social studies this week, we talked about natural and manmade landmarks. Ask your student if they can think one natural and one manmade landmark in their area! 

In math, we began talking about the different ways to make 10. We learned about using a rainbow to show the ways to make 10 and how using fingers can help with counting! 

We did our art cards this week! Students painted spring flowers and they look great! Art Cards are a fundraiser organized by the School Council. These cards will be available for purchase at a later date. 


Coming up:

Valentine's Day is coming! We will be celebrating on Wednesday, February 11th. If your student would like to bring Valentines, please ensure that there is one for every student in the class. We have 24 students in our class. Please do not write the names of classmates on the Valentines, and only write who they are from, to make distribution of the cards easier. As per CBE policy, please do not attach candy to the valentines.

Friday, January 23rd Hello grade one families! I finally have access to the weekly blog and will be posting updates here at the end of each week. Since I have been in for Ms. Carter, we have been learning lots! In math, we have learned different ways to represent numbers, print numbers, evens and odds, and we have recently begun addition and doubles! This week we took a short break from doubles to learn about some 2D shapes. Ask your student about the shape monster they made on Wednesday! Next week we will be getting back to addition and focusing on the different ways to make 10. Friday, February 6th Hello grade one families!  Mrs Carter should be back in class on February 17th. As there is an extra long weekend coming up, my last day with the class will be February 11th . I have loved getting to know your student over the last few months and I hope they enjoy the remainder of their time in grade one! Our week started with some Valentine's Day art! We used oil pastels to colour in hearts, and noted the difference between warm and cool colours. Ask your student if red is a warm or cool colour! We will be celebrating V alentine's Day on Wednesday, February 11th. If your student would like to bring Valentine's Cards, please make sure to send one for every student in the class. We have 24 students in the class. Please only write who the Valentine's Cards are from, and do not put other student names on the cards to make to easier to distribute.
